Compartment Pressure Testing
Chronic compartment syndrome is a painful condition most often seen in the lower legs. When exercising, blood flow to the muscles increases and the muscles expand within their compartments. This expansion increases the pressure in the muscle compartments. In chronic compartment syndrome, the fascia does not allow enough room for the muscles to expand, leading to pain.
The best way to diagnose compartment syndrome is compartment pressure testing. This involves inserting a small catheter under local anaesthetic into the compartment to be examined. Pressure is measured at baseline. The patient then exercises to the point of symptom onset and pressure measurements are repeated while symptoms persist.
